3 Things To Optimize Lactation

I often get asked by patients what they can do to improve success with Lactation during pregnancy so below are my 3 recommendations:

1.     Take a breastfeeding class or schedule a prenatal appointment with an IBCLC.

Research shows being surrounded by families that are also breastfeeding as well as having lactation support improves your chance of breastfeeding beyond 6 months!

2.     Get a Flange Fitting!

We never know what those early weeks postpartum will bring and many parents need to use a breast pump either because of health reasons, child care, work demands, or maybe your nipples just need a break!  Understanding how to pump and having a properly fitted flange is essential. The average size flange that comes with your pump is 24mm vs studies show the average nipple size is 13mm! Women in Motion is proud to offer in person and virtual flange fittings 7 days a week !

3.     Take a probiotic !

The Academy of breast-feeding medicine recommends taking a probiotic.

Studies show that L. Salivarius and L. Fermentum strains of probiotics directly impact the breast microbiome, specifically during cases of clogged ducts and mastitis.

Probiotics have been found to support mother and infant microbiome.

The microbiome, genetic expression, and environmental factors are thought to contribute to a development of certain conditions and sensitivities

Risk factors for dysbiosis (microbiome disruption)

·      Delivering via Cesarean

·      Receiving antibiotics before delivery

·      retained placental tissue

·      delivering before 38 weeks

Not all probiotics are created equal so we have done the research for you!

At women in Motion we now carry Breast Health +
These probiotics can decrease the likelihood of breast dysbiosis that can lead to recurrent mastitis.

Supporting a healthy gut microbiome also helps to reduce whole body inflammation.
