How to get baby to drop during labor

The active stage of labor is a very crucial time to stay active and continue moving to help baby descend down into the pelvis.

However, after an epidural most hospitals limit movement to only positional changes on the bed due to the risk of falls and monitoring that may be required.

We wanted to provide you 3 ways you can continue to stay active and mobile through active labor with an epidural.

We believe all births are natural, and whether you are having a medicated or unmedicated birth we want you to have all the tools you need for an empowered birth.

These modifications are great if you are tired, dizzy, have low back pain, pubic symphysis or SIJ pain or decide to get an epidural.

Modifications for Laboring in bed:

Squats

Squats are a great way to open up the inlet. As baby drops into the pelvis we want to focus on asymmetrical movements to help open up the pelvis. This is a great modification you can do on the bed.

Lunges

Lunges can be great to open up the midpelvis. A yoga ball can be used to modify this activity if you are limited to the bed

Hip Rotation

If your birth provider is checking babies position and baby is stuck or not dropping hip rotations can be a great way to create more room to allow baby to wiggle down into the pelvis. This can be down on your back, your side or even seated upright.
